Every two years, the folks over at D1 Baseball decide to rank the top 100 college baseball programs, which they describe as “an attempt to assess the overall health of each program in the current era”.
The COVID shortened 2020 slate meant this exercise got pushed back to 2022, and this year’s list included the Gonzaga Bulldogs as the No. 49 ranked program in the country, coming off another WCC Championship and their first regional victory.
“Since 2016, Gonzaga has been the premier program in the West Coast Conference, and it’s not particularly close,” Aaron Fit of D1 Baseball wrote. “The state of the program remains very strong.”
The Zags went 37-19 last season under coach Mark Machtolf, reaching as high as No. 10 in the rankings which set a program record.
Gabriel Hughes, Tristan Vrieling, and William Kempner represented an extraordinary pitching staff, led by new associate head coach Brandon Harmon, and while all three are out the door for next season it’s clear this program is in very good hands under Machtolf and Harmon going forward.
