Kelly Olynyk had 21 points and seven rebounds in Team Canada’s 99-87 victory over Argentina in the FIBA world cup qualifiers on Thursday.
Kevin Pangos, Olynyk’s former teammate at Gonzaga, tacked on five points and two assists in six minutes off the bench. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paced the Canadian’s with 23 points.
Gonzaga was initially set to have three alumni on Team Canada’s roster, but Kyle Wiltjer ended up not suiting up for the team this go-round. He took to Twitter to celebrate the victory, and explained he wishes he could have been there, but was headed out to his next professional opportunity.
Brandon Clarke and Andrew Nembhard are both eligible for Team Canada’s roster as well, but Clarke reportedly wasn’t interested in participating (he’s in a contract year) and Nembhard reportedly was not invited.
Team Canada now advances to face Panama on August 29 as they look to stake their claim as a major player on the world’s stage.
