(A previous version of this article stated that only Kyle Wiltjer was representing the Zags in the TBT. It has since been corrected)
The Basketball Tournament is a, well, basketball tournament that takes place every summer, with a 64-team bracket and teams taking home huge swaths of dough – this year $1 million in cash for the winning squad.
The Zags had a team full of alumni a few years back – A Few Good Men – which tragically lost to a squad of Saint Mary’s alumni in a triggering event for many fans (and possibly some of the players).
This year there is no Gonzaga team – again – and looking through the rosters it looks like there are only two former Zags, Kyle Wiltjer and Josh Perkins, set to participate this season.
Adding insult to injury, Wiltjer is set to take part with team Boeheim’s Army, the defending champions from 2021 and, as you probably guessed, a team with primarily Syracuse alumni.
Watching a team of Orangemen is not how most Zag fans want to spend a summer evening, but Wiltjer has been balling ever since his time in Spokane, and it will be fun to see him in TBT.
As for Perkins, he is participating with team Friday Beers – formerly known as Armored Athlete. They are one of the most successful teams in TBT history, and Perkins will be teammates with former San Francisco point guard Frankie Ferrari, who is currently playing summer league ball with Sacramento.
